Political Factoid
Amazon pays money for
advertising referrals to a
large number of "Amazon
Associates" who operate
independent websites
throughout the Unites States. |
The states of California, North Carolina,
Colorado, Connecticut, Arkansas, Illinois,
Rhode Island, and now Minnesota, have
each passed state sales tax legislation
... that requires companies (like Amazon)
which are headquartered out-of-state
but which have a "nexus" in the state,*
to collect state sales tax for all sales
within the state.
| * |
A nexus means link or tie, including any physical presence,
such as a store or warehouse, as would be a post office box,
or telephone call center, internet website, or a billboard
or other advertising physically located in the state,
even a door-to-door salesperson or agent.
|
Consequently, Amazon has cut ties
with all of its associates in the above
listed states to avoid a nexus.
Amazon has demonstrated time after time
that it chooses not to operate on level
playing fields, e.g., paying the same taxes
its competitors must.
