Political Factoid

The Constitution has always required a
special election if a vacancy occurs
in the House of Representatives,*
but was initially silent about a vacancy
in the Senate.**

*  Art.I, Sec.2, Clause 4

**  Art.I, Sec.3
The 17th Amendment somewhat rectified this.
(Originally, senators were selected by the
state legislatures, not by a vote of the people.)
