The 2011 budget compromise:*
  • $6.2 billion in Department of Defense
    construction projects (mostly earmarks)
     
  • $3 billion for high-speed
    rail funds
     
  • $3 billion for highway construction
     
  • $1.6 billion reduction in the
    EPA budget, with almost $1 billion
    cut in grants for clean water and other
    projects by local governments and Indian tribes.
     
  • $1 billion cut
    from programs that help prevent the
    spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
     
  • $1 billion cut from grants to states
    that help pay for drinking water
    infrastructure projects
     
  • $600 million in cuts to
    community health centers programs
     
  • More than $500 million cuts from
    WIC, a program that uses federal money to
    subsidize the food and nutrition needs of
    children from low-income families
     
  • $414 million in cuts to grants for
    state and local police departments
     
  • $390 million in cuts to heating
    assistance for those with low incomes
     
  • $260 million cut for the National Institutes of Health,
    which funds critical medical research
     
  • $17 million cut in Family planning programs (Title X)
